Nizas

We hope you have found the perfect accommodation for your visit to France in our pages. Wine has been made here for thousands of years. The region is perfect for producing wine, sunshine, a gentle climate, sheltered by mountains around us from the cruel Mistral winds of Provence and the angry Tramontane winds of Rousillon, soil with a perfect structure for wine.

We will give you free maps to show you the wine trails and we can advise some of the best places to visit. You will find the real pleasure will be discovering some of the small domains where you can stop and taste the wines usually made by the proprietor who will stop and join you in a glass, or two, of their produce.

We are starting these pages with an introduction to our local Mayor, Michael Soulairol, who has the domaine of "Saint Jean de Roca" in Nizas and produces some excellent wines. His home, which is also the winery, was a hostel for pilgrims in the 8th century. There are the remains of Roman buildings and it is certain that wine has been made on his estate without pause for over two thousand years.

The second is the most recent family to sell their wine direct from their 'cave'. Emmanuel Thalic opened his doors in 1999 and is offering an AOC Rose and a Red Merlot
