How Do I Make a Friendly Garden Near The Mediterranean

As a small property owner in France we would like to make our garden more appropriate for the owner who is not available all year round and can only care for it when visiting.

Can you can recommend a gardener to design a user friendly garden and there is a wall to build as well. I live in the Perpignan region. Many thanks
Anne

Hello Anne

Thank you for you mail, this is a very interesting subject and I will publish it and ask if anyone has any advice they can give.

My advice for vacation home gardens is usually - do not get one - you can come back after a few months and need a flamethrower to clear the growth. Many people forget that in our Mediterranean climate plants and trees can grow like wildfire, we had a walnut tree that would shoot the branches out 5 meters a year and our new grass lawn needs cutting every two days at present. My usual solution is to cultivate concrete and paving and fertilise with roundup.

I have seen some gardens which are mainly in pots and containers, with a lot of stone and paving. I am sure there are many varieties which are slow growing and hardy - temperatures do go just below zero for a few days each year and up to 38 degrees in summer, we do get a lot of rain in a few days, but can have 6 months without a drop, so a lot depends on your watering system or how deep the ground water is.

I will try to open a gardening section in a forum somewhere.

Finding a local builder is something you should try to do through a personal recommendation - failing that look in the local ex-pat press and free-sheets and any online magazines covering your area.

Hope this helps and that others can make gardening suggestions

best wishes

Tony
